CMHL has employed one full time Mental Health Social Work Educator. 

The role of the Social Work Educator will be to continue to build upon the priority areas identified in the 2021-2022 scoping report by offering discipline specific training based on both gaps previously identified as well as new gaps in workforce training. 

 

Mental Health Social Work Training and Events 

World Social Work Day 2024. 

World Social Work Day is an annual event which will be on the 19th of March 2024. The theme for this year is “shared future for transformative change”. CMHL hosts this free online event to support social work workforce development that is accessible to all mental health social workers in Victorias public mental health system. 

Our presenters this year include: 

  • Professor Linda Briskman, Margaret Whitlam Chair of Social Work at Western Sydney University. A human rights researcher and activist in the spheres of indigenous rights, asylum seekers and anti-racism. 
  • Dr Natasha Long, Lecturer and field Education Coordinator at La Trobe University Bendigo. An experienced lecturer and field educator with a passion in social work identity development and education. 
  • Jacara Egan, is a Wayapa Wururk practitioner, and passionate mental health social worker currently working as the National clinical and Cultural advisor with headspace National as well as coaching in the AFL. 

 

Cultural Humility Training 

In July, a half day workshop for social workers will be offered. This follows on from last year's introduction to the Cultural humility framework, based on Dr Mayio-Konidaris-Kozirakis' PhD research and experience. This topic will be further explored and developed. Last year's session was a well-attended training event which generated much interest.  

 

The Online Social Work Conference 2024  

This year CMHL will host a biennial online conference for Social Workers. This will be an all-day online Zoom event. This year's theme is titled “Reframing Complexity” and promises to showcase an array of engaging and interesting Social Work presentations.

 

The Social Work Club 

CMHL invites all Social Workers in the public mental health system to join the Social Work Club. The Social Work Club is place for social workers to come together, engage, share and reflect on Mental Health Social work.

  • Session 2. Wednesday 7th of August 10.00-11.30. Family violence, To be confirmed
  • Session 3. Wednesday 9th of October 10.00-11.30. FAPMI, To be confirmed
  • Session 4. Wednesday 6th of November 10.00-11.30. Topic to be confirmed

Social Work Meetings 

State Wide Public Mental Health Social Work Leadership Network and Practice Group (SW LN) 

The Statewide Mental Health Social Work Educator continues to provide a secretariat role and support to the SW LN. The Leadership Network engages Social Work leaders from across Victorian Public Mental Health (VPMH) so that collectively Social Workers act as a representative voice that advances the interest of the Social Work profession. Social Work’s value and impact stems from its ability to:

  1. Drive change and influence sector reform
  1. Build the profile of Social Workers and contribute to workforce development
  1. Connect people, ideas and information
