Description

We are very excited to announce our March webinar in the Connect & Learn series for 2019.

The brain disease model of addiction and implications for practice

This webinar aims to synthesise and translate new research that has examined a broad range of AOD treatment providers views (e.g., case workers, social workers, psychologists, doctors) about the brain disease model of addiction (BDMA) and its clinical impact.

Viewers of the webinar will be encouraged to reflect on how discussing the brain in practice may influence clients experience of care.

Objectives

1. Introduce the BDMA (including a brief history and its place in policy)

2. Present new research on Australian AOD treatment providers’ views about the BDMA (in comparison to their colleagues in the US and UK)

3. Discuss the potential effects of discussing the brain and what it might mean for clients’ experience of care

Presenter

Tony Barnett joined Turning Point in 2018 as a research officer. Working in the clinical research team, his work explores the views of consumers and clinicians about drug and alcohol treatment, care and recovery across a range of settings. Tony is also currently completing his PhD at Monash University. His thesis explores Australian drug and alcohol treatment providers’ views about the brain disease model of addiction and how neuroscientific models integrate with practice.
