Event description

This free online course will assist you to develop a range of practice skills for working with parents who have concerns about their child’s mental health and wellbeing. These skills can contribute to engaging parents in the therapeutic process either prior to or in the early stages of working with children.

This session will cover:

In this course you will work towards developing your confidence to use a range of practice skills in:
– establishing a collaborative relationship with parents.
– assisting parents to identify and describe what is important to them as a parent, and the hopes they have for their child.
– supporting parents to see problems in the broader social context of children’s lives.
– inviting parents to reflect on their understanding of their child’s experience and perspective of the problem.
– exploring parents’ previous efforts to respond to the problem.
– supporting parents’ understanding of how their child has been responding to the problem.
– opening up conversations with parents about their appreciation of their child’s strengths, skills and know-how.
– consulting with parents to help make the child’s attendance and participation in counselling possible.

Eligibility criteria

You are encouraged to complete the Engaging with children introductory course: https://emergingminds.com.au/online-course/engaging-with-children-a-foundation/ which introduces you to the concept of engaging children as partners in practice, as a foundation for responding to child mental health concerns. Through this course, you will become familiar with the key values that underpin this concept and consider how these relate to the values and practice ethics practitioners bring to this area of their work. Learners will also be introduced to the key shifts in position and perspective required to effectively engage children as partners in practice.
