Description

This on-line and one-day interactive and practical professional development training assists clinicians to understand the possibility that their clients who experience mental health and substance use/addiction may have experiences of childhood and/or other past or current trauma(s), which could be affecting their health, wellbeing, daily interactions and functioning.

This is a blended training package that includes three on-line modules and a live face-to-screen (F2S) session. It is interactive and practical professional development training designed to assist clinicians understanding of clients who experience mental health and substance use/addiction issues and the impact of experiences of childhood and/or other past or current trauma(s) on their health, wellbeing, daily interactions and functioning.

This training is introductory and appropriate to a wide range of work roles. It covers basic clinical treatment options and puts trauma in a context that provides clinicians with a trauma-informed focus to better understand challenging emotions and human behaviour that clients who have mental health and substance use/addiction may present with.

This training uses current research to provide a basic understanding of trauma and the core principles of trauma-informed practice - a recovery, strengths-based approach vital for every person working in the helping professions, whether you work in government, non-government, public or private sectors.

Participants are expected to complete three online modules prior to the live session. Online modules will take approximately 2-3 hours to complete

This event will cover:

  • Develop understanding of the types, prevalence, neurobiology and impacts of trauma
  • Use trauma-informed approaches to reframe challenging emotions and behaviours as adaptive responses to trauma
  • Practical applications of trauma-informed approaches to your work/care and to assist with developing trauma-informed recovery
  • Specialist speakers from lived/living experience backgrounds, Addiction Medicine & family services.

Eligibility criteria

Anyone in the workplace from diverse sectors including, but not limited to, health, mental health, alcohol and other drugs services, community, legal, justice, domestic and family violence, child protection, emergency, disability, housing and employment services.
