Description

THIS IS A 2 DAY WORKSHOP. PARTICIPANTS MUST REGISTER & ATTEND BOTH DAYS.

Introduction

Motivational interviewing (MI) is an evidence-based, person-centred and goal-oriented approach that strengthens a person's motivation for and commitment to making personal change. This training is based on the latest (4th) edition of the instructional text, written and developed by William Miller, PhD and Stephen Rollnick, PhD. Over the past 30 years, MI research and practice has been used across the areas of addiction treatment, healthcare, mental health, corrections, education and public health. With over 300 clinical trials, MI is one of more researched behaviour change methods utilised today.

Course Objectives

The aim of this interactive course is to introduce the theory and foundational skills of MI through didactic and experiential processes. Participants will become acquainted with the theories behind and supporting MI and key foundational skills in order to add it to their practice. The course is ideal for people keen to learn about MI and to develop their practice.

Outline

• What is MI and what is not MI

• The Spirit of MI

• The foundational skills for listening and connection

• Recognising and responding when someone talks about change

• Maintaining the relationship during pushback

• Planning for Change

Participants can expect a mix of didactic learning combined with live demonstrations and practice.
