Description

This interactive workshop steps frontline staff through the process of identifying potential instances of elder abuse, connecting with older people, respectfully enquiring about suspected abuse (as appropriate), and beginning to formulate an appropriate plan of action, including the provision of referral options, guided by an older person's will and preferences. It is highly recommended that you complete the Senior Rights Elder Abuse Prevention Tool Kit.

This event will cover:

  • Recognising the potential signs and understanding the complexities of elder abuse
  • Applying the principles of person-centred, family inclusive practice when communicating with an older person about the abuse and
  • Planning appropriate follow up and/or referral, in collaboration with the older person and/or guided by their will and preferenc
  • How to respond when an older person does not want to take any action in relation to the abuse
  • Your responsibilities in reporting suspected elder abuse

Eligibility criteria

For hospital and community services staff in direct contact with older people e.g., allied health and medical staff, nurses, workers supporting carers/families, in-home care workers, housing workers, mental health & AOD staff as well as staff working in family violence services. Please note a manager’s approval is required and will be advised of your attendance. (Open to Victorian Residents Only)
