Description

This workshop will be specifically targeted towards speech pathologists already working within mental health services in Victoria and will aim to build upon current knowledge about how trauma impacts the developing brain, leading to deficits in a range of areas such as learning, memory, emotional and behavioural regulation. In addition, an attachment framework will further illuminate issues in the caregiver/child relationship and how this might impact on the child’s sense of self and how they relate to others. The use of case studies will highlight how these issues may show and participants will have the opportunity to share their own experiences in working with children observing client confidentiality as paramount. The role of the speech pathologist will be explored including practical strategies using a trauma informed approach.

This event will cover:

  • Overview of trauma with explanation of types of trauma, abuse, maltreatment and neglect
  • Current information on how trauma impacts the developing brain, and how we can use a trauma informed approach to both understand
  • An attachment framework and opportunity for positive intervention
  • The role of the speech pathologist – what are the challenges and opportunities?
  • Appropriate goal setting for this client population
  • What services and resources are available to assist?
