Description

This workshop will teach General/Good Psychiatric Management for Adolescents (GPM-A), a treatment model originally designed for adults and newly adapted for adolescent borderline personality disorder (BPD). The prevalence of BPD in adolescents is similar to that of adults and comprises a significant proportion of young people seeking mental health services with symptoms of self-destructive behavior and failure to persist in the developmental pathways of their peers due to instabilities of self-esteem, interpersonal instabilities, emotional dysregulation, and behavioral dyscontrol.

The workshop will outline modifications to the adult GPM model to meet the specific needs of adolescents and their families, so that earlier intervention can occur to put teens back on track with developmental opportunities to build a path to adult life, less on the borders or margins, and more capable of generating and sustaining a sense of purpose and belonging. Like GPM, GPM-A organizes its clinical approach on the idea that interpersonal hypersensitivity is a core problem of BPD. The hope is that, given the neurobiological flexibility of youth, earlier intervention with a less intensive treatment can alter the course of BPD. Introducing adolescents to treatment while their BPD traits are still highly malleable can help lead them toward a more stable and satisfying developmental trajectory into adulthood, and better functioning in school, work, and relationships.

This event will cover:

  • Explain the diagnosis to adolescent patients and families and establish reasonable expectations for change (psychoeducation)
  • Manage the problem of recurrent suicidality and self-harm while limiting personal burdern and professional liability by adherin
  • Identify when to prioritize BPD’s treatment and hwen to defer until a comorbid disorder is resolved
  • Describe the management of conservative psychopharmacology when treating BPD
  • Explain how to keep adolescent patients developmentally “on track.”
  • Appreciate the importance of self care, self awareness, and reflection when engaging with people who have BPD
