Description

Our trauma specialists will discuss why assessing a child’s ‘relational health’ is a crucial and an often-overlooked step in supporting children to heal from abuse, family violence and neglect. A Take Two clinician will discuss a case study demonstrating how we approach assessing and expanding a child’s network of supportive adults. We’ll also be discussing how we support the families and other adults to make their everyday relationships therapeutic for the child.

Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions. Automatic subtitles will be available during the event.

Background
Tens of thousands of Australian children have experienced abuse and neglect from adults who were supposed to look after them. Traumatic childhood experiences can make relationships and the world feel unsafe. This can make it difficult for children to engage with us because they may see all adults as potentially threatening. They may use very challenging behaviours to try and keep themselves safe.

For practitioners engaging with these children, building trust and relational safety is complex and often difficult. We must try to understand the reasons behind a child’s behaviour so we can help them feel safe and show them we are worthy of their trust.
