Description

Clinicians can face complex diagnostic and treatment challenges when people present with features of both BPD and post–traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). A degree of clarity has been achieved since Complex PTSD was formally included in ICD–11 but diagnostic difficulties and treatment challenges persist.

Seize the opportunity to hear from national and international experts in the fields of BPD and complex trauma. The program features Dr Lois Choi-Kain, Assoc. Prof. Josephine Beatson, Assoc. Prof. Loyola McLean and our very own Assoc. Prof. Sathya Rao, Dr Lukas Cheney and Sarah Wallace.

Dr Lois Choi-Kain, Director of Gunderson Personality Disorders Institute will begin the day to provide evidence that trauma-related disorders and personality disorders are not mutually exclusive and debates arguing as such should be laid to rest.

Assoc. Prof Jo Beatson will outline the troubling history of trauma-related psychiatric disorders since the late 1800s. Discoveries re their aetiology and treatment were repeatedly made and forgotten until the 1980s. Why this is still relevant and thoughts about current disavowal of trauma-caused psychiatric illness will conclude this presentation.

Assoc. Prof Loyola McLean from the Brain and Mind Centre at the University of Sydney with interests in the body-mind interface, attachment, trauma, psychotherapy and integrated trauma-informed care will talk about the importance of co-constructing a collaborative connection to foster growth for people experiencing complex trauma and personality disorder.

Our Spectrum clinical specialists, Assoc. Prof. Sathya Rao, Dr Lukas Cheney and Sarah Wallace will provide the latest evidence in working with people with personality disorder and/or complex trauma.

You will also have the opportunity to hear from carers and consumers with lived and living experience of complex trauma and personality disorder in our panel discussion facilitated by Cathryn Pilcher.
