Description

At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
- Clarify the context and purpose for using lived experience
- Determine boundaries of sharing lived experience and prepare aspects of their story
- Understand trauma, re-traumatisation and vicarious trauma; and implement strategies for prevention.
- Use lived experience to establish your work role
- Utilise a range of communication skills and strategies to establish rapport and maintain safe working relationships in relation to using your lived experience
- Support others to share their stories
- Utilise responsible self-care strategies.

The learning content will specifically address:
- Words and language make a difference
- Understanding lived experience
- Frames of reference about mental illness
- Developing and sharing your story
- Managing risk in using your lived experience
- Trauma, vicarious trauma and re-traumatisation
- Self-care strategies
- Intro to communication skills
- Supporting others to share their story
- Reframing stories
- Basic counselling skills for effective communication
- Frameworks and approaches to peer work
