At the completion of this workshop, participants should be able to:
Clarify the context and purpose for using lived experience
Determine boundaries of sharing lived experience and prepare aspects of their story
Understand trauma, re-traumatisation and vicarious trauma; and implement strategies for prevention.
Use lived experience to establish your work role
Utilise a range of communication skills and strategies to establish rapport and maintain safe working relationships in relation to using your lived experience
Support others to share their stories
Utilise responsible self-care strategies.

The learning content will specifically address:

Words and language make a difference
Understanding lived experience
Frames of reference about mental illness
Developing and sharing your story
Managing risk in using your lived experience
Trauma, vicarious trauma and re-traumatisation
Self-care strategies
Intro to communication skills
Supporting others to share their story
Reframing stories
Basic counselling skills for effective communication
Frameworks and approaches to peer work
