Description

Feeding and eating difficulties are very common in children and adolescents on the autism spectrum, with estimates ranging from 46-89%. This workshop will summarise the literature regarding fussy eating and eating disorders in young people on the autism spectrum, overview assessment of these issues, and review the evidence –based interventions. Interventions for Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder or, ARFID, in older children and adolescents will form the major focus.

Treatment focuses on a combination of techniques aimed at addressing both weight gain/normalization of eating and additional symptoms including fear, disgust, and varying forms of functionally-related avoidance behavior. Case-studies and interactive activities will be used to demonstrate key interventions.
