Description
Autism spectrum disorder is now commonly diagnosed in childhood, but this was not the case for the generation who are now adults. Changes in diagnostic practices and a growing awareness about how Autism presents in adulthood brings new opportunities to provide a diagnosis to those who were missed. Psychiatrists and other mental health clinicians need to be able to recognise autism in the context of comorbid psychiatric disorders such as psychosis, personality disorder, depression and anxiety. This training will provide an introduction to how Autism presents in adults and how to engage Autistic adults in a mental health treatment. Please note this training does not focus on intellectual disability and severe challenging behaviours.This event will cover:
- Recognising ASD in psychiatric clients presenting with other mental health disorders
- Engagement strategies to support Autistic adults in mental health care
- Lived experience perspectives
